Spain at a glance

Spain is a country of contrasts — cosmopolitan Madrid, beach-perfect Barcelona, the white villages of Andalusia, the green hills of the Basque Country. For English teachers, this diversity means you can tailor your experience significantly based on where you choose to live.

English demand is driven by businesses, international schools, language academies (academias de idiomas), and government auxiliary teacher programmes. Spain is particularly known for its work-life balance and welcoming attitude toward foreign teachers.

Cost of Living

What does life in Spain actually cost?

Living in Spain

What to expect when you arrive

🏠
Finding Accommodation
Shared flats (pisos compartidos) are the norm for teachers, especially in larger cities. Platforms like Idealista and Fotocasa are widely used. Expect to pay a month's deposit. Many teachers arrive and stay in a hostel for the first week while flat-hunting in person.
🥘
Food & Culture
Spanish food culture is extraordinary — tapas, paella, jamón, fresh seafood, and incredible markets. Lunch is the main meal (often subsidised at work via a menú del día for €10–€12). Dinner is late — 9pm or 10pm is completely normal. Life is lived outdoors and socially.
🏥
Healthcare
Spain has a world-class public healthcare system. Once registered as a resident (empadronamiento), you can access public healthcare. Private insurance is inexpensive and widely used by expats. Pharmacies (farmacias) are abundant and pharmacists can advise on minor ailments.
☀️
Lifestyle & Weather
Spain's lifestyle is famously relaxed and enjoyable. Warm weather for much of the year, beautiful beaches, mountains, historic cities, and festivals make weekends and holidays genuinely exciting. The Spanish siesta culture is alive in smaller towns and adds a pleasant rhythm to the day.
Visas & Entry

How to get your work visa for Spain

EU/EEA citizens can work in Spain freely without a visa. Non-EU citizens (including Americans, Canadians, Australians, and British citizens post-Brexit) need a work visa or can enter on a tourist visa and apply for a student/work visa from within Spain via specific programmes.

The most popular route for non-EU teachers is the Language and Culture Auxiliaries Programme, which provides a legal framework, a monthly stipend, and relatively straightforward entry.

1 Apply to auxiliary programme or secure private school offer
2 Gather documents (degree, background check, medical cert)
3 Apply at Spanish consulate in your home country
4 Register as resident (empadronamiento) on arrival
Key Requirements
  • ✓ Bachelor's degree (any subject)
  • ✓ Native or near-native English speaker
  • ✓ Clean criminal record (apostilled)
  • ✓ Medical certificate
  • ✓ Valid passport (6+ months validity)
  • ✓ CELTA qualification (strongly preferred)
