Living in Japan

What to expect when you arrive

🏠
Finding Accommodation
Many teaching positions — particularly JET Programme and private language schools — include housing or help finding it. Gaijin Houses (foreigner-friendly share houses) are popular first options. Renting independently requires a guarantor, which some agencies can assist with.
🍜
Food & Culture
Japanese cuisine is world-renowned and remarkably affordable at the local level — ramen, sushi, and bento boxes from convenience stores are filling and cheap. Vegetarian options are more limited outside cities, but improving. Food culture is central to daily life and socialising.
🏥
Healthcare
Japan's healthcare system is excellent and affordable. Residents enrol in National Health Insurance (NHI), which covers 70% of medical costs. Most employers assist with enrolment. Hospitals and clinics are widespread, though finding English-speaking doctors may require some research in rural areas.
📱
Staying Connected
Getting a SIM card in Japan has become much easier for foreigners. Major providers include Softbank, NTT Docomo, and various MVNOs. Pocket Wi-Fi rental is popular for the first few weeks. Free Wi-Fi is widely available in cities, cafes, and convenience stores.
